چکیده

Impact of hybridization and irradiation in isolation of superior segregants in four crosses of desi cotton were studied and compared between F2 and F2M2 progenies. The F2M2 progenies of four crosses recorded higher per cent of superior segregants compared to F2 progenies for boll number, boll weight and halo length excepting in KS-16 x MB-3200 cross. Out of four F2M2 progenies, RDC-53 x 9747 cross produced higher percentage of superior segregants for number of bolls per plant, boll weight and seed cotton yield per plant as compared to remaining progenies. The superior segregants identified for rare combination of traits revealed that F2M2 progenies of four crosses in general produced more number of superior segregants for combination of traits as compared to F2. The F2M2 progenies of the KS-16 x MB-3200 recorded more number of superior segregants for combination of seed cotton yield and halo length. Similarly F2M2 progenies of KS-16 x 9747 and RDC-53 x 9747 recorded more number of superior progenies for combination of seed cotton yield and boll weight traits compared to remaining progenies. These results indicate that use of irradiation involving selected parents in cross combination was better option to get higher number of promising progenies as compared to hybridization alone.

Efficiency of Indirect Selection to Improve Yield and Drought Tolerance in Populations Derived from Inter-Specific Hybridization of Soft Flower

The use of appropriate selection methods are important to increase yield in breeding programs. Utilization of selection indices is one of the most effective method for selection of superior genotypes to improve the complex traits such as seed yield. In order to evaluate the efficiency of different selection methods, 63 families of two F3 populations derived from inter-specific hybridization of ...

Evaluation of Agronomic Traits and Drought Tolerance of Safflower Lines Derived from Three Inter-Specific Crosses

Due to genetic erosion over evolution events, the genetic diversity of domesticated safflower species for drought tolerance is limited. Wild species has been considered as useful genetic resources for improvement of abiotic stress tolerance. In this study, a cultivated species (C. tinctorius) was crossed by two wild species (C. palaestinus and C. oxyacanthus) and the genotypes were purified unt...

Hybrids in fishes and their identification using microsatellite DNA markers: A review

Among vertebrates, most of the fishes are unique for the lack of acrosome in their spermatozoa. The sperm enters the egg through micropyle of the egg. This has facilitated heterologous fertilization in many fishes and led to hybridization and polyploidization. Hybridization is performed both in the nature and domesticated fishes. Today, some of the hybrids have high growth rate than their paren...

Broadening Gene Pool of Rice for Resistance to Biotic Stresses Through Wide Hybridization

Variability in the cultivated germplasm for economic traits such as resistance to rice tungro virus, sheathblight, yellow stem borer, drought and salt tolerance is limited. This necessitated search for the genes in secondary and tertiary gene pool of genus Oryza. Fortunately, wild species are an important reservoir ofuseful genes for resistance to major disease, pest and tolerance t...

Genetic analysis of grain yield, days to flowering and maturity in oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) using diallel crosses

Twenty one F2 progenies derived from a 7×7 diallel crosses along with parents were evaluated for grain yield, flowering and maturity time. Due to significant genotypic effects for all traits, genetic analyses were performed on F2 progenies including analyses of combining ability and genetic components. The Analysis of variance revealed that both additive and non-additive genetic effects were in...
